What’s better than a Palm Springs escape? Perhaps one that is a classic piece of modernist Design. Richard Neutra’s Kaufamann Desert House, immortalized in the work of heavyweight photographers Slim Aarons and Julius Shulman, is for sale.

Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr., commissioned Neutra to design the building in 1946. Kaufmann had worked with Frank Lloyd Wright a decade earlier to create another historic residence, Falling Water, near Pittsburgh. He sought a winter getaway from his home where he could enjoy the California desert.

Neutra delivered on Kaufmann’s request with an exemplary piece of the modernist style for which he was known. The heavy use of sliding glass walls and light, slatted supports bring the interiors of the building closer to its natural surroundings. Terraces, gardens, and a pool invite occupants to enjoy the desert space.

The Kaufmann house is now on sale for $25m from Vista Sotheby’s International Realty.
