San Diego-native artist, Erik Skoldberg has created a visually stunning and innovative artwork influenced by the classic Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead. Using a surprising element of the vehicle’s branded hub cab, the eclectic piece highlights gold, metallics, bronze, and teal petinas bringing the beauty of the luxury vehicle to life on a canvas.
Growing up in San Diego, the contemporary artist’s history with O’Gara goes back more than 5 years. Now residing in the buzzing city of Nashville with a 6,000 sq ft studio in Downtown, Skoldberg curates energetically-charged creations using his signature layering and coloring style. From creating specially-commissioned surfboards to becoming the official artist for Adidas Super Bowl LIV, the up-and-coming artist takes pride in creating “experiential art” – telling a story that goes past the paint.
In his new Rolls Royce artwork, the 3-dimensional painting focuses on the original rim, following a free hand, rugged outline of the convertible Dawn. Capturing the majestic size of the luxury vehicle brand, the large-scale piece is almost 10 feet long. A lover of cars and automobiles, Skoldberg has done past commissions capturing the essence of Ferraris, Porsches, and vintage Broncos, but has always wanted to do a design showcasing the beauty of a Rolls Royce.
Starting with a backdrop of acrylic on linen, the artist uses a delicate layering process of adding one layer of paint per day up to 12-15 layers ensuring the stark texture and depth that signifies his paintings. As classic and timeless and the British vehicle brand, Skoldberg’s new design brings the luxurious lifestyle to canvas in this immaculate piece.
